Influence on EMS: As a 91B, I was involved as an instructor teaching non-resident classes to medics. Later, as a civilian, I worked with the 68W Transition group to train medics transitioning to this new Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). My focus was on teaching TCCC along with the military version of PHTLS. I feel this has given me an appreciation for teaching students outside the traditional class environment.

Leadership Experience: I joined between my junior and senior years of high school and completed Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, followed by Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia. I spent 19 years with the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), in communications and Chemical Recon Detachment. I later transferred to the 204th MEB, where I served as First Sergeant for 4 1/2 years, and eventually retired as Operations Sergeant Major.

Awards: National Defense Service Medal (NDSM): Awarded for honorable active service during a period of national emergency.

Influence on EMS: My military service has had a major impact on the way I serve in EMS. The discipline, teamwork, and ability to stay calm under pressure that I learned in the military directly carry over to patient care and emergency situations. I’m used to working in high-stress environments where quick thinking and clear communication are essential, and that experience helps me stay focused when others might panic. The military also taught me the value of structure and accountability, which I now apply to every call, report, and interaction with my team. Most importantly, it gave me a deep sense of service — a drive to help people and protect others — which is at the heart of being an EMT.

Influence on EMS: While on active duty, I became my unit's first aid and CPR instructor, then OJT trainer supervisor. Moving to the reserves, I was afforded a role as a military training instructor at the Air Force Basic Military Training School. The essentials of education and leadership remain integral to my daily work.
