WELCOME TO THE SOE CORE NEWSLETTER!
Forward Momentum
Growth, momentum, and the people making it happen.
Every experienced EMS professional was once the person trying to remember where the equipment was, second-guessing an assessment, or hoping no one noticed how nervous they were.
August brings another busy season across School of EMS, with new cohorts beginning, students progressing through labs and clinicals, and teams across the organization preparing for the months ahead.
This month's newsletter is a reminder of something easy to forget as we gain experience: everyone starts somewhere. The expectations we set, the opportunities we provide, and the way we teach along the way all play a part in developing the clinicians our communities will depend on tomorrow.

SUCCESS IN ACTION

Student Spotlight: Benjamin Toarmina
| |
Ben came in every day and was studying. Ben made efforts at every station to make sure he got everything he could out of it. In his free time, he wanted to practice or study more. He never once complained about doing extra stations or when he was asked to study. Any feedback he was given, he took it and made himself that much better.

SUPPORT STATUS
Student Services has been preparing for a busy stretch as a large number of August and September cohorts get underway. From enrollment and financial arrangements to documentation and student questions, the team continues working to make sure students have what they need to begin their programs.
With cohorts starting across multiple states and programs, the focus remains on resolving issues quickly, keeping students informed, and helping each new class get off to a strong start.

EDUCATION BRIEFING
The new schoolwide Instructor Office Hours are off to a strong start, giving students another opportunity to connect directly with instructors outside of their regularly scheduled coursework.
Strong attendance has made the sessions a valuable resource for students who need additional help, want to work through difficult concepts, or simply have questions. By making instructors more accessible across programs, Office Hours are adding another layer of academic support for students throughout SOE.
+ Featured Article: “Everybody Has a First Day” by Chad Pate, EMS Programs Director, School of EMS
This month, Chad Pate challenges us to remember what it was like to be new—and to consider the role experienced clinicians play in shaping those who come behind them. High standards and accountability matter, but so do patience, productive struggle, honest feedback, and creating an environment where learners aren't afraid to say, "I don't know."
From students completing their first skills to experienced clinicians beginning again in unfamiliar environments, Chad reminds us that everyone has been the new person at some point—and that how we teach during those moments matters.

LAB REPORT
Where Readiness is Built.
July was a strong month for Live Education, with nearly 1,600 EMT and Paramedic students participating in Lab Days across SOE. Behind the scenes, the team reviewed more than 3,600 required lab documents while also delivering 35 BLS, ACLS, PHTLS, EPC, and AMLS certification courses.
Student performance remained exceptional, with a 100% pass rate for EMT Final Lab Day Testing. After applicable retesting, Paramedic students also achieved a 100% pass rate on Lab Day 12 and a 98.1% pass rate on Lab Day 13 Oral Boards.
The team also continued investing in instructional quality through instructor monitoring, making July a strong start to the new academic year.

CLINICAL COMMAND
Where Care Comes to Life.
July was another active month for Clinical Education, with nearly 300 new onboarding submissions and more than 100 students cleared to begin clinicals.
Students completed more than 4,000 clinical shifts during July, supported by nearly 2,000 shift requests and OpenShift sign-ups throughout the month.
Those experiences are made possible by SOE's growing clinical network, which now includes more than 1,300 active EMS and hospital sites and over 800 active affiliation agreements. Together, these partnerships continue to provide students with the real-world experience needed to build confidence, strengthen clinical judgment, and prepare for the field.

DOCTOR'S NOTE
A message from our medical leaders.
Strong clinicians aren't developed by memorization alone. They learn to assess the entire patient, recognize when something doesn't fit, make sound decisions, and know when to ask for help.
Those habits begin during education. Medical Direction continues working alongside SOE faculty to ensure students are challenged to think critically and understand the why behind patient care.
The goal isn't simply to prepare students to pass the next exam. It's to prepare them to make the right decision when a patient is depending on them.

CHIEF'S CORNER
More than education....a message from our CEO.
"Experience comes with responsibility.
As we grow in our careers, things that once required our full attention eventually become second nature. We gain confidence, develop judgment, and learn lessons that can't always be found in a textbook. The real value of that experience is what we do with it.
At School of EMS, we have the opportunity to pass those lessons on every day. That doesn't mean lowering expectations. Our students are entering a profession where competence matters and mistakes have real consequences. We should challenge them, expect them to prepare, and hold them accountable.
But we should also teach.
The student who needs extra guidance today may be the clinician someone depends on tomorrow. Our responsibility is to help make sure they're ready when that day comes."
- TC Howard, CEO School of EMS

FINAL HANDOFF
Here's what you need to know before we wrap.
The students beginning their journey with SOE today will eventually become the clinicians running calls, making difficult decisions, training new employees, and teaching the next generation.
What they take with them won't come only from a textbook.
They'll remember the instructor who stayed to explain something again. The preceptor who gave them another attempt. The person who challenged them when they needed it and encouraged them when they were ready for more.
Every one of us started somewhere. Now we have the opportunity to help someone else move forward.
Teach them well.
We'll see you next month!
